One of the most anticipated holidays is Halloween. On this holiday, many people dress up as their favorite superheroes to favorite celebrities.

Are you wondering why we dress up for Halloween? One of the best thrift stores in Omaha wants to share with you a little background on this spooky holiday and give you the most thrift worthy costume ideas.

THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween goes back over 2,000 years ago with the Celtics. It started with Celtic people celebrating Samhain on Oct. 31. This holiday was celebrated to mark the end of the harvest season and the end of the Celtic year. They also believed that on this day, ghosts would roam the earth. During this festival, the Celtic people would make large bonfires to keep the spirits away.

WHY DO WE DRESS UP FOR HALLOWEEN?

The reason why people dress up on Halloween started with the Celtic people. During their celebration of Samhain, they would dress up as animals to hide from malevolent spirits. Centuries went by and the Europeans started to dress up for what they called “mumming and guising.

They would dress up, perform songs and exchange food with neighbors. This tradition made its way to the United States when the Irish and Scottish migrated. It was then transformed into the modern-day practice that we know today as “trick-or-treating.”
