Upcycling Day

Whether you find something at a thrift store or come across a forgotten item, upcycling is a great way to repurpose an item and give it a second chance at life. Upcycling Day is a day dedicated to encouraging this practice worldwide! “Out with the old and in with the new” is a forgotten phrase on this day, as old items are celebrated! Our team at Thrift World wants to give you ideas for how you can repurpose secondhand items in your life and find new uses for them. Find items for upcycling at our thrift store near you or online.

What is Upcycling Day?

Upcycling Day is an international celebration that takes place every June 24th. On this day, we celebrate the repurposing of old items and upcycling them. In 1994, the term “upcycling” was coined by William McDonough and Michael Braungart who were two German engineers who focused on the remodification and re-engineering of old items. In 2002, upcycling began to be celebrated, as it is not only a creative outlet but good for the environment as well.

What is upcycling?

Upcycling is the modification of an item to add another purpose or use while still retaining the original state. When upcycling an item, you give it a second chance instead of throwing it away. This is better for the environment and allows things to be reused for other purposes.

How to upcycle thrifted finds?

It’s all about creative vision! When it comes to upcycling thrifted finds, it’s up to you to figure out what you want to do. Whether you want to transform an item of clothing or turn a piece of furniture into something new, the options are endless.

Clothing

Transforming a piece of clothing into something new is a refreshing way to stay on top of the latest trends! Try turning a pair of jeans that are a little too baggy into a pair of cutoffs. If that isn’t quite your style, a denim dress might be in your future if you can operate a sewing machine.

Home goods

If you’re needing to spice up some basic items found around your home, we have some ideas! Vases can be basic and might need some sprucing up. A fun and easy way to make them stand out is by adding rope around the outside to give it a nautical vibe. Have an old rattan basket laying around? Turn it into a pendant light by putting a hole in the bottom and secure it to a light. This expensive-looking light is now repurposed. A once worn-out and distressed armchair can be transformed into a statement piece for your home. Add a fabric that matches the aesthetic of your home and you have a new trendy chair.
