WHO ARE BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE MIDLANDS?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands is a nonprofit organization that helps children in Omaha and Council Bluffs metro area realize their potential and build their futures. Their mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
This nonprofit offers unique one-to-one brand mentoring. They match adult volunteers (Bigs) with children (Littles) who are from 7 to 21 years old. The Bigs help the Littles succeed in school, avoid risky behaviors and improve their self-confidence.
THE HISTORY OF BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF AMERICA
This nonprofit organization started in 1904. It was created by Ernest Coulter, a young New York City court clerk. In his work, he saw lots of boys come through his courtroom. He believed that caring adults could help these kids stay out of trouble. Thus, he started to look for volunteers.
Around this same time, the Ladies of Charity (later known as Catholic Big Sisters) were helping girls that went through the New York Children’s Court. In 1977, the Big Brothers Association and Catholic Big Sisters International teamed up and became the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
