This is an authentic vintage hand-carved figure originating from Zaire, the former name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1971-1997). The piece features a highly stylized form with an exaggerated belly and a smiling face, typical of certain regional artistic traditions. Crafted from a dark, dense wood, it is adorned with a natural fiber 'beard' and facial details applied with a clay or pigment medium. A handwritten label on the base reading "Old figures Zaire SH2257" serves as important provenance, indicating its history within a collection.
