Rural Pastoral Scene (The Gleaners)
Hand-Colored Engraving on Paper
21.5" x 18.5" (Framed)
Printed signatures in lower margin

This vintage hand-colored engraving depicts a classic English pastoral scene, showcasing the collaborative work of painter Richard Westall (1765-1836) and engraver William Ward (1766-1826). The composition captures a group of rural figures gleaning wheat in a wooded setting, accompanied by a laden donkey. Westall was a prominent member of the Royal Academy and served as a drawing master to Princess Victoria, while Ward was one of the most distinguished engravers of his era. This piece reflects the late 18th-century Romantic interest in idealized rural life, rendered with fine detail and soft, atmospheric coloring.

• Features plate-printed signatures "Painted by R. Westall" and "Engraved by W. Ward"
• Housed in a vintage wood and gilt frame with a classic double matting
• Reverse bears an original gallery label from Sarachek's of Kansas City, Missouri
• Framed dimensions approximately 21.5" x 18.5" x 1.5"

Condition: Good vintage condition. The artwork surface appears well-preserved with vibrant colors and no significant foxing or toning visible under glass. The frame exhibits minor surface wear and gilt loss consistent with age. Note that the backing paper on the reverse shows heavy water staining and tears, though the print itself remains unaffected.
