THE HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY
The celebration of Father’s Day began in 1908 when a church in West Virginia held a memorial for 362 men who were killed in a coal mining explosion. This event was considered to be the first-ever event honoring fathers.
The following year a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd requested that fathers should have a day of celebration just like mothers do. Dodd was very passionate about giving all fathers a special day because her father raised her and her six siblings.
After a year of petitioning, Dodd’s home state of Washington celebrated its first-ever Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, this holiday spread throughout the whole country. It was not until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed a law to declare Father’s Day an official holiday.
Now Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide but on different days. In the United States, it is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. People take their fathers out to eat, write them cards or buy them one-of-a-kind gifts.
