FOUR EASY WAYS TO REDUCE WASTE

 10/6/2021 11:15 AM

We only have one Earth, so why not try to protect it. Taking care of the planet is as simple as reducing our waste. The average American produces 1,704 pounds of garbage per year. This amount is a problem because it is three times the average of what it is globally. However, we can reduce waste by making lifestyle changes. Our clothing donation Omaha team wants to share four simple things you can do to reduce waste.

BUY SECOND HAND CLOTHING

Fall calls for a change in weather. In some places, the weather might not drop dramatically, while in some places, it might. Preparing your wardrobe for the fall is essential to stay warm. One way you can accomplish this and reduce waste is by buying second hand clothing.

When you buy second hand clothing, you are giving unused clothing a new life. Thrift stores have tons of apparel that accommodate the seasons. You can get all your fall essentials from sweaters to jackets without having to buy new items.

REPURPOSING HOME DECORATIONS

Redecorating your home does not always mean you need to buy new items. You can redecorate your home with existing items you likely already own. By repurposing old items, you are reducing the demand for new items.

USE YOUR EXISTING ITEMS BY REPURPOSING THEM

For example, if you have chalkboards, write a fall quote on it or fill bowls with pinecones and pumpkins that accommodate the change of seasons. If you’re missing some items, check out a thrift store first for those items. These stores always have jars, glassware and other items that are useful for DIY projects.

BUY REUSABLE FOOD CONTAINERS

If you like to share meals with family and friends, save money and reduce waste by thrifting dishware. There are a lot of containers on the market that can get the job done. But, many of these containers are only used once and are harmful to the environment.

For example, styrofoam products take over 500 years to decompose and release harmful chemicals into the environment. To reduce the use of these harmful containers, buy reusable dishware from thrift stores. These containers are durable, inexpensive and reusable.

DONATE YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS TO A THRIFT STORE

While cleaning your home, you might have come across some items that no longer fit your style or needs. Instead of tossing them out with your garbage, consider donating them to a clothing donation Omaha service. A report has shown that 17 million tons of textile waste end up in landfills. Some of these textiles can take up to 200 years to decompose.

Thrift stores take item donations all year round. Most thrift stores, like Thrift World, take clothing and shoes of all sizes. They also accept household items like small kitchen appliances, dishware and home decorations. You can take your donations to a store, donation bin or schedule a donation pick up.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A CLOTHING DONATION OMAHA LOCATION?

Check out Thrift World! You can bring your item donations to one of our stores or donation bins around town. If you do not have time to bring in donations, schedule a donation pick up. This service is free and supports local charities. Schedule a donation here.
